Christmas is a fantastic time of year, and it makes sense that so many people want their landscaping to match the occasion. Christmas lighting is beautiful and it can give many people a warm feeling. Whether you’re trying to impress the neighbors or you simply want to see something beautiful when you look out your window, a Christmas light display can be very rewarding.

That said, you want to make sure you’re being safe when putting up any displays. Below, we’ll cover a few of the most important Christmas lighting safety tips you should keep in mind. These include being vigilant for overheated extension cords, why you shouldn’t run lights from the inside of your house to the outside, and the importance of knowing when to call in the professionals.

Avoid Overheating Your Extension Cords

Extension cords are a great way of making your outlet more effective, but only up to a point. Overusing an extension cord can lead to overheating, which in turn can lead to an electrical fire.

To avoid this, you want to make sure you’re not plugging too many Christmas lights into the cord. The general rule of thumb is that you shouldn’t use an extension cord for more than three strands of Christmas lights at any point in time. That said, strands and cords vary, so you’ll want to check and see that the combined wattage of all the strands you’re using does not exceed the maximum wattage allowed by the outlet.

Don’t Run Lights From Inside Your House To Outside Your House

Outdoor outlets are essential for most Christmas light displays. If you don’t have any outdoor outlets, you may think you can simply use one of your indoor displays and run it through a door or window. However, it’s imperative that you don’t do this.

If the door or window is accidentally closed with wires running through, the wires may break. This is dangerous and could lead to an electrical fire.

Call Professionals

There are a myriad of different advantages that come from choosing to hire lighting professionals. Alongside the convenience and the amount of time you saved, you should also consider working with professionals for safety reasons.

The more elaborate the display you want, the more potential there may be for danger. That’s why you want to speak with a professional to determine whether or not you can create the display yourself.

Expert Christmas Lighting – Lit Professional Lighting

There’s a lot to love about the holiday season: the feeling of togetherness, the joy of celebration, the happiness on kids’ faces.

However, there’s one question we frequently hear homeowners asking: when’s the right time to start putting up lights for the holiday season? Some people complain of Christmas fatigue, saying that Christmas is less special when we celebrate it for months on end. Others just want to enjoy the holiday how and when they want to.

At the end of the day, it’s up to you to decide when you’d like to see your Christmas lights on your property, but below we’ll let you know some common timeframes.

Wait Until Halloween is Over

The most common piece of advice you’ll hear regarding Christmas light timing is to wait until Halloween is over. After all, you want to make sure your property is properly decorated for any trick-or-treaters. As well, it’s hard to get in the holiday spirit when everyone around you is in more of a spooky mood.

Specific Dates to Keep in Mind

Most people say to wait until at least the second or third week of November until installing your Christmas lights. This gives you enough time to take down the Halloween decorations and put up the Christmas decorations.

If you’d prefer, you may also choose to wait until after Thanksgiving.

You Should Put Christmas Lights Up When They’ll Make You Happy

Ultimately, Christmas is about celebrating the joys of life. This means you should put the lights up when they make you happy.

Above we’ve provided typical etiquette rules, but some people like celebrating Christmas in July. Some people even put up Christmas lights to make their children happy during quarantine. Assuming there aren’t any homeowner’s association rules you’d be breaking, determine what would make you happiest and do that.

When Should You Request an Estimate For Christmas Tree Light Installation?

While the decision of when to put up lights is a matter of personal preference, when you should ask for an estimate isn’t. It’s important to keep in mind that lighting companies often have repeat customers every year, and these customers may have already claimed a large portion of their time during the holiday season.

We recommend asking for this estimate in September or October. While it may seem silly to ask before the Halloween season is over, this ensures that a professional lighting company will have time available on their schedule.

Looking for a Free Christmas Tree Lighting Estimate in Houston, Texas?

Whether this is a special holiday for you or you just want to appreciate the beauty of a well-designed lighting display, we’re here for you.

At Lit Professional Lighting, we deal with a broad variety of different kinds of landscapes: residential, commercial, and more. That means we’ve seen some of the most frequent questions that Houston residents have about landscaping. Over the years, we’ve had more and more people ask us about energy efficient lighting.

In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about energy efficient landscape lighting: why some people prefer it to regular lighting, what kinds of light fixtures are the most energy efficient, and more. We hope this helps you as you determine what kind of lighting display you want.

Why People Choose To Get Energy Efficient Landscape Lighting

There are three major reasons why people often prefer energy efficient landscape lighting to typical lighting fixtures. The first is that it helps you save money on energy costs. This makes sense: the less energy your landscape lighting is using, the less money you need to spend to power it.

Along with helping you save money on energy bills, energy efficient lighting is also eco-friendly. There’s also a less intuitive reason why energy efficient lighting is better: it helps increase the longevity of your fixtures. Because they’re not using as much energy, they last longer.

What Kinds of Energy Efficient Light Can You Use?

LED lights are often used in these designs, since they’re so much more efficient than other forms of lighting. Some LED lights use only 25% of the energy required by typical lights. They usually come with a greater upfront cost, but over time the energy costs more than make up for it.

It’s also possible to use solar lights, which are powered by the sun. While these lights are of course using energy, it’s not energy you have to pay for and they’re still more eco-friendly than other kinds of lights.

Looking for Landscape Lighting in Houston, Texas?

If so, you’ve come to the right place. At Lit Professional Lighting, we’re dedicated to ensuring that Houston residents are able to get some of the highest quality lighting services available throughout the country. Whether you’re looking to put up a seasonal display or you just want to light up your backyard, Lit Professional Lighting is here for you.

If you own a business with significant greenery, you need to get it lit. This is true whether there are walkways on your property or simply a lot of lawn.

Below, you’ll learn a few things you should know before getting lighting for your commercial landscape: why it’s so important, what type of lighting is right for your business, and more. By the end, you should be prepared to start your commercial landscape lighting project.

Commercial Landscape Lighting is Important For Security

If you’re running a property, the last thing you want is accidents. Yet without good lighting, that’s exactly what could happen.

Dark walkways make it easier for people to trip, which in turn makes you vulnerable to lawsuits. As well, an area without lights can make people feel less safe, since they won’t be able to see any strangers or animals approaching them.

Commercial Landscape Lighting is Important For Aesthetics

Along with security concerns, good landscape lighting also makes your landscape look better at night. If your property is well-maintained, the last thing you want is for people to walk or drive by without being able to see anything.

The right lighting will grab people’s eyes and attention, making them think about your business. This encourages walk-in traffic and leaves people with a positive impression.

What Type of Lighting is Right For Your Business?

When determining the right lighting to get, you have to take a few different considerations into mind. The first is how much area you want to cover. Some fixtures, like bullet lights, are great for brightly illuminating a small area but not as good for ensuring that an entire property is appropriately brightened.

As well, you’ll want to take your monthly energy budget into account. Different fixtures have different levels of efficiency. If you’re looking for energy-efficient cost-effective lighting, LEDs are an excellent choice. They can use up to 75% less energy, and they last much longer as well.

Finally, we’ll take into account how resilient your fixtures need to be. While all of our fixtures are resilient against weather conditions, we need to consider how often you or your employees are able to change bulbs.

For years, LiT Professional Lighting has been helping business owners ensure that their property is well-lit, so you can trust that we’ll be able to advise you on which lights are right for your needs.

Looking for Commercial Landscape Lighting in Houston, Texas?

Creating a great Christmas lights display in Conroe, TX can be a fun and competitive task.

But what can you do to make your Christmas light installation look better than the rest? Take a look at some of these helpful tips to turn your home into Winter Wonderland.

Your Conroe Christmas Lights Display

If you take a drive through nearby neighborhoods to take in the holiday lighting, you’ll likely identify two types of homes. One of these is a landscape that has haphazard lights and decorations that results in a blinding blur of gaudiness.

The other type of home is the one that has their holiday decorating down pat. There’s a few key techniques utilized to bring a home a pleasant and attractive cohesiveness when it comes to their Christmas lights display.

A Unique or Personalized Theme

What are you trying to celebrate with your lights during the Christmas season? A standard display with typical Christmas colors can do just fine if you’re looking for simplicity. But you could also use it as an opportunity to create something that tells the neighborhood something about you or your family.

You could highlight a particular interest, your favorite sports team, or something else personal to you. Whatever your vision is, stick to the theme and create ideas that you can then implement.

Plan Where Your Lights Will Go

Once you’ve selected your theme and planned what you will want to make, it’s time to create a blueprint. This will allow you to create a visualization of what your ideas will look like when actually applied to your home or lawn. You’ll be able to spot any unforeseen issues and make the necessary adjustments before you commit to purchasing.

If you’re unable to come up with effective solutions on your own, consider recruiting the help of a professional landscape light installation company that has the tools and experience. They’ll be able to suggest alternatives so that you can realize your dream lights display.

Install Your Lights and Decorations

The actual installation will hopefully be made simpler with your careful planning. Once you’ve purchased your lights and tools, it’s time to see what it really looks like.

First and foremost, take every precaution you can to keep yourself safe while climbing ladders or standing on your roof, especially if you encounter snow or ice. Avoid overreaching, make sure your ladder is locked and stable, and prioritize your safety and balance over everything else.

Second, avoid nailing or stapling your lights into fixtures. Even if the initial break doesn’t impact the light strand, continued friction and wet weather can create a short. At best, this can cut power to a light strand, and at worst, create sparks or surges that can lead to bigger problems. Properly fasten all of your light strands or electronic decorations to a fixture without damaging the strand or your home.

Finally, consider installing timers to conserve power or create a more dynamic display. You can set different strands to illuminate in different intervals, creating more of a light show as opposed to static illumination.

LiT Professional Lighting – Conroe, TX

Lighting your trees is an effective way to add safety and appeal to your landscape.

While your large trees can be visually appealing during the daytime, they can actively darken the area further after hours. This can make areas of your lawn gloomy and unsafe from those who would do you harm.

LiT Professional Lighting is here to assist Houston communities with landscape light installation. Here are some tips to help your trees accent your outdoor landscape no matter the time of day.

Choose Your Method of Lighting Design

There are different styles and methods for emitting light sources around your trees. Whether you’re trying to directly illuminate the tree, or create a silhouette effect, there are different options to consider.

Shadowing

This mode of landscape light installation works best when the illuminated object has a hard, flat surface nearby to catch shadows. When you place your light at a certain distance from the tree, the light shines and casts a shadow effect on the wall. The light also softens past the tree as it hits the wall, creating a moody atmosphere. Flood lights and spotlights work well when creating this effect.

Downlighting or Moonlighting

This works great when you have tall trees in your yard. You can install smaller accent lights near the top of the tree and aim them down. The light emits down through the leaves and creates a nice lighting effect on the ground below. It helps illuminate an area that would otherwise be heavily darkened at night due to the size of the tree.

Uplighting

This is a form of outdoor lighting that is not unlike shadowing. The main difference is that these spotlights will illuminate a tree regardless of its location in the yard. You aren’t looking to create a shadow effect as much as you are trying to highlight the tree itself from below. Just plant your light somewhere on the underside of the tree and play with illuminating different points to your liking.

Things to Focus on When Installing Light Fixtures

Outdoor lighting is generally meant to add a subtle illumination that adds clarity and appeal. You don’t want to inadvertently point lights too far up where they’re wasting energy, nor at those occupying the space. Finding the right angle to focus on the tree itself or the stump allows the light to calmly disperse, adding sufficient soft lighting throughout the nearby area.

Also, bear in mind that trees and plants also require time in darkness. Monitor your energy consumption by setting your landscape lights on a timer to benefit you both.

If you’re new to holiday lighting, you may be wondering what the difference is between C6, C7, and C9 Christmas lights. These identifiers refer to the bulb sizes and shape, and possible wattage.

We’re going to help you break down the differences between each of the light types and whether you should use led lights or incandescent lights. We’ll also explain what light bulbs we use at Lit Professional Lighting and why.

C6, C7, and C9 Christmas Lights – The Differences

C6 Christmas Lights

These are the smallest lights that still have that traditional Christmas bulb shape. The only size smaller are mini icicle lights which have a thin, pointed shape in comparison.

C6 lights (the C stands for cone Size) are generally ¾” round and 1 â…›” tall. They have bulbs designed to illuminate Christmas trees or smaller pieces on your property. They can be used for perimeter lighting when placed strategically and densely, but ultimately don’t burn as bright as larger options.

C7 Christmas Lights

C7 lights are the same shape as C6 lights, but larger. They are a full 1″ round and 1.5″ tall. They are fairly versatile and can work well on medium to large outdoor trees. C7 bulbs typically burn at about 5 watts per bulb and make a great light source for your property’s holiday lighting.

C9 Christmas Lights

C9 bulbs are Lit Professional Lighting’s light of choice. They still maintain the shape of C6, and C7 lights, but are the largest yet. They are 1 ¼” round and 2.5″ tall, a full inch taller than the C7.

C9 light wattage can be up to twice as powerful as C7 lights. Due to their power, they are commonly used for commercial purposes, and really illuminate roofing and larger parts of your landscaping. We shoot for quality, and that’s why we use C9 lights to light your home brighter than any other house on the block!

Incandescent or LED Christmas Lights?

We previously broke down some of the major differences between the two light types. To summarize, an LED string will utilize less power, but burn less brightly in return. Incandescent lights can burn very bright. Just take care with this option as they get very warm.

Whether you choose LED or incandescent bulbs, they’ll fit into the same strand so long as the size matches accordingly. This comes in handy if you’re looking to test out both bulb types to see what you prefer.

Landscape light installation is a challenging task that requires multiple steps and safety considerations. However, these lights will accent and illuminate your home, making it visually appealing to residents and enhance curb appeal.

Each light fixture and its placement go a long way in setting the desired mood for the area. Let’s walk through some key steps to help you get the most out of your landscape lighting and make it easy to install.

Create a Plan for Your Layout

Take the time to survey your property. Make note of any key fixtures you want to highlight such as a garden, bench, or other areas of interest. Be sure to consider the placement of preexisting fixtures, such as porch lights or flood lights. You’re looking to highlight areas that are otherwise dim or dark in the later hours while avoiding over-saturation of areas already lit.

Consider other landscape lighting fixtures such as path lights along walkways or lights for backyard ponds. Once you’ve come up with some ideas for your DIY project, bring out your inner artist and draw at least a rough sketch indicating the placement of lights and where you will run electrical cable. You’ll need to make sure you’ll have access to an outdoor electrical outlet when you finally install low voltage lights.

Gather Key Supplies

Now, it’s time to consider the amount of money you wish to spend. Solar LED landscape lights are generally the cheapest as they do not require additional wiring or installation devices to function. However, if you’re placing lights in an area that does not receive much sunlight, you’ll likely not get the desired result you want from this option.

Low voltage landscape lighting is relatively affordable and can be installed on your own at home. Placing multiple low intensity lights at different angles will softly illuminate areas without creating a strong shadow effect. These dim lights are also great at illuminating walkways when spaced equidistantly.

LED lights also come in a variety of colors. Decide whether you want an area to have a sharper, yellow light, or to have a softer, muted look with a different color.

To make it all work, you’re also going to need a transformer with an appropriate voltage. You’ll need to check to make sure that it is capable of a power output that matches the length of the cable type you are using to connect your lights. The low voltage cable you’ll need is typically made to be hidden underground. It comes as a 12, 14, or 16-gauge cable – the lower numbers are thicker and capable of more.

Install and Test Your Lights

Once you’ve gathered your light fixtures and cable, begin laying them out. Space your lights at even intervals. Then, run the cable alongside all of the fixtures accounting for any obstacles that might be in your way. You may need to run more cable to go around certain objects.

Once everything is in place, dig a roughly three inch deep trench and place your cable at the bottom of it. Outdoor lighting cable is designed to withstand the elements, and this allows you to hide the unsightly wiring.

Finally, you’ll want to install the transformer near the desired electrical outlet. Carefully follow the instructions that come with your transformer to correctly insert the copper wires from the low voltage cable. Tighten the screws to seal the wires inside. You’ll want to quickly install a plastic cover to protect the outlet when in use in the case of rainfall.

Once you’ve tested that your lights are correctly receiving power, you’re ready to plant them into the ground.

You work for a significant amount of time only to realize several bulbs have burnt out and the bulbs or entire strand needs replacing. Professional installers will attend to any mishaps or issues with your lights so that you don’t have to worry about it.

Tailor-Made Designs

Looking to do something different with your Christmas lights? If your ambition is to have the most eye-catching Christmas display in your neighborhood, you’ll want to turn to a professional lighting company’s expertise. They’ll have seen a variety of different setups, which may even help you get ideas for your display.

Removal and Time-Management

We all have busy lives, which include daily work hours or families to attend to. Our schedules ramp up even more so around the holidays to reach deadlines before taking off for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the new year. Any extra time includes shopping, cooking, and making possible travel arrangements to accommodate yourself and loved ones for the occasion. You deserve to enjoy the time you do get on the holidays and don’t need to worry about the laborious task of taking everything down once it’s over. They’ll test your lights and carefully gather, sort, and store them for you when the celebrations are over.

Professional Quality

Lighting companies will decorate your home with the highest quality lights for Christmas time. The products they provide will burn brighter and last you for the season without worry. They can also add additional customization to make your decorations seem more vibrant or fuller than what you will find at a regular store.

If you’re thinking about what to do for your needs regarding Christmas light installation in Houston, Texas, look no further than Lit Professional Lighting.

SHOULD I INSTALL LED OR INCANDESCENT CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

Many people question the need or reason for using LED vs Incandescent when it comes toChristmas light Installationon their home or business. There is no correct answer, rather what is more suitable for the project at hand. First lets talk about the key differences between the two.

Efficiency

LED bulbs are 8-9 times more efficient

LED C9 bulbs use .8 watts of power where as Traditional incandescent bulbs use 7w watts

That being said you can connect together 8-9 times the amount of LED together as you would with the traditional incandescent bulbs.

It is normal to connect up to 125 incandescent bulbs on a single lights strand, totaling 875 watts.

With LED you can connect nearly 1,100 LED bulbs on a single lights strand, totaling 880 watts.

More practical for very Christmas light Installation projects with several hundreds – thousands of feet needed.

Color

Most assume ALL LED are a light blue / cool white color, which is untrue.

Customer demand has driven technology to develop an LED bulb which resembles the color of a traditional incandescent bulb.

A traditional incandescent bulb burns at a temperature of about 2700K, which is defined as warm white.

What people might not realize is that LED can come in a variety of different colors. Warm White, Pure White, and Cool White being the 3 most popular.

If you like the look of a traditional incandescent bulb, you should request to have Warm White LED product when shopping forChristmas light Installation

Pictured Below is our Incandescent vs LED christmas lights, can you tell which is which?

Incandescent vs LED C9
Christmas Light Installation in Houston By LiT Professional Lighting

Longevity

LED bulbs are rated to last 60,000 Hours

Incandescent Bulbs are rated to last 3,000 hours

Reliability

LED bulbs are made of durable shatter free plastic

Incandescent Bulbs are made of a thin glass which shatters easy

When hiring LiT Professional Lighting forChristmas light Installation, its always nice knowing LED product wont fail as fast as the Incandescnt.

Cost

LED technology is newer and better, which means more expensive.

Is it worth it to invest in a more expensive product? Knowing LED will reduce electric consumption, last longer, and break less?

There is no correct answer of Incandescent vs LEDChristmas light Installation. Incandescent is cheaper, better for smaller jobs, and has a classic look. LED is more durable, efficient, and expensive, allowing for a long lasting, quality installation.
